We're All Socialists Now, Pt. 2 (By Philip Holmes) Investors beat down shares of former automaking giant General Motors by 23% on Monday following Deutsche Bank's move to downgrade the stock from hold to sell. The price target? Goose eggs, or $0.00 as they say in Texas. The company says it needs as much as $15 billion of taxpayer dough to consummate its unholy marriage to Chrysler. Investors must figure that as a long shot, what with the roughly $1 trillion already going to save the financial services sector. While Americans may be squeamish about quasi-socialist bailouts, their would-be successors as economic big dogs, the Chinese, have no such qualms. China's government has hatched a $586 billion economic stimulus plan, and is pitching it to the public without shame or qualification. Wiping a Keynesian, sawdust-etched tear from our eye, we note that the plan will be heavy on infrastructure investment. But wait! Just when you thought the American Reds were finished, along comes Treasury's Hank Paulson to hit one into the (ever dearer) seats at insurer American International Group. Through its new TARP vehicle, Treasury will snap up around $40 billion of AIG preferred shares. As we all look forward to stockings filled with coal this Christmas, we note the passing of electronics retailer Circuit City into Chapter 11 twilight. This is the firm that not long ago fired some of its top earning salespeople, only to offer them their old jobs back at sharply lower wages. Yes, and it's the same CC that for years bullied these same salespeople into relentlessly pushing extended warranties onto every customer. It got so you couldn't buy a $10 calculator at CC without having to turn down the extended warranty offer at least three times. Circuit City pledges to stay in business during its restructuring, a series of moves that will include the firing of hundreds more salespeople. What do you want to bet that an army of lawyers, bankers and consultants will soon be getting rich working for Circuit City? And that the same guys that pulled that sleazy fire/rehire stunt get golden parachutes and skip away as rich men from the company they ruined? Why, it almost makes one yearn to vote a charismatic young liberal into the White House!
