Construction of the plant will begin in May 2009 with completion slated for the end of that year. Experiments to be conducted there by Tokyo Institute of Technology and others will begin in early 2010 to help confirm the plant's durability and sunlight-collecting capabilities.
The order is valued at around 800 million yen (US$8.19 million).
The plant will use 33 sun-tracking mirrors and the "beam-down" solar collection technology developed by Professor Yutaka Tamaura at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The beam-down approach has lower construction and maintenance costs than conventional solar thermal power plants because the solar furnace is located on the ground rather than on top of a tower.
The project is part of Abu Dhabi's plans to build a carbon-free city using sunlight and other natural energy.
