Nov 11, 2008 (The Philadelphia Inquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- TWX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Chris May, shifted into the main male anchor seat at CBS3 after Larry Mendte's firing in June, was announced yesterday as the permanent holder of the 6 and 11 p.m. job.

And thus ends the last vestige of the anchor team of Mendte and Alycia Lane. (It's all over except for the lawyers.)

May, 38, arrived here from Boston in October 2007 to share the weekend evening shift. He moved to coanchor of the weekday 4 p.m. news after Marc Howard retired. When news of the Mendte spy scandal broke, May was thrust into the main anchor role.

May's coanchor, Susan Barnett, got her job officially in April, more than four months after the firing of predecessor Lane.

Mendte is due in federal court Nov. 24 for sentencing. He pleaded guilty to hacking into Lane's e-mail and sharing the information, especially privileged attorney-client communications, with the media.

Lane has sued CBS3, Mendte, and the Philadelphia Daily News in connection with the leaks.

Rally for a 'Hero'

Philly's Anne Mahlum, one of 10 "CNN Heroes" for her work with the nonprofit group Back on My Feet, will be feted at 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Mayor Nutter's office in City Hall. The footage will be used in the awards show, which will be on CNN at 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Mahlum's charity helps the homeless gain self-esteem through running.

Radio activity

Danny Bonaduce has set up a mini-gym in his studio at WYSP (94.1) for his new morning show, which debuted yesterday. Exercise equipment includes a bench, free weights, and floor-mounted punching bag. Bonaduce professes to be trying to quit smoking. He wore an antismoking patch on his right bicep and spread out his weapons -- cappuccino-flavored Commit antismoking lozenges, nicotine gum, and an inhaler -- next to . . . a pack of Marlboros. Besides hosting 6 to 10 a.m. on WYSP with sidekick Shila and producer Metro, Bonaduce is keeping his L.A. radio show. He pipes it out there from 5 to 6 p.m. daily.

Among the winners last week at the March of Dimes Achievement in Radio Awards was WMGK's "DeBella Turkey Drop," which is John DeBella's annual turkey-and-cash collection for City Team Ministries Philadelphia. It's coming up again on Nov. 25, when DeBella camps at LOVE Park from 6 to 9 a.m. and assorted WMGK personalities visit assorted Genuardi supermarkets. The economy has a part this year. The charity last year gave out 12,000 food boxes. So far this year, WMGK says, it's given out more than 18,000.

The Sports Chatter Guys, formerly heard on 950ESPN, have resurfaced by buying a one-hour show at 1 p.m. Mondays on WNWR (1540).

Briefly noted

Martha Stewart and three aides spent 15 minutes Friday in Teuscher, the candy store in the Bellevue, as groupies took photos through the glass storefront. She left with more than $150 worth, in Thanksgiving turkey boxes.

One last mention of that pinata that Carnival Cruise Lines set up at Broad Street and Washington Avenue to shoot for a commercial: With the long-delayed shooting finally a wrap, the company this week will donate four tons of candy to charities that include Philabundance, the YMCA, Ronald McDonald House, Dignity Housing, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and Travelers Aid Family Residence Center.

NBC10's Tracy Davidson will host an "HD Transition Phone Bar" from 4 to 6:30 p.m. tomorrow to answer questions about the transition to HD broadcasting on Feb. 17. The phone number is 1-877-622-9228.
