The top floor of Iowa Hall at Kirkwood Community College was a beehive of activity Tuesday as representatives of 60 Eastern Iowa employers networked with those seeking jobs or considering new careers.
The three-hour career fair drew a steady stream of Kirkwood students seeking employment and experienced job seekers.
Dani Lind of Lisbon was making the rounds after being laid off Thursday at Yellowbook in Cedar Rapids.
"I think you have to take advantage of things like this career fair where you can meet some people and find out what skills employers are looking for," Lind said.
Thomas L. Cardella & Associates, a fast-growing call center operator with locations in Cedar Rapids, Coralville and Keokuk, saw the fair as an op portunity to recruit for a variety of positions.
"We know that Kirkwood students are very well educated, and we are happy to be hiring in the Corridor," said Kristy Shreeves, director of organizational services. "We've found a good mix of entry-level and managerial candidates today. With our new call centers in Cedar Rapids and Coralville, we have opportunities for part-time and full-time positions as well as openings on our corporate staff." Some employers, like Alliant Energy, were offering internship opportunities to Kirkwood students and looking for experienced job seekers to fill open positions at the utility holding company.
"We've seen a wide variety of skills available here today," said Staci Wall, Alliant Energy talent acquisition specialist. "It's been neat to speak with those who have been laid off and dusting off their resumes after 14 years.
We have a lot of experienced technical positions that we need to fill." While some sectors of the financial services industry are experiencing rough times, Cedar Rapids-based GreatAmerica Leasing signed up for the career fair to fill openings brought on by continued growth.
"We have a lot of positions open right now," said Chad Greenlee, GreatAmerica human resources specialist. "I've found two candidates for a senior sales position. We've found everything from collectors and portfolio managers to customer service and information technology.
"With the layoffs at Yellowbook, hopefully we can provide some employment opportunities." Morris Pound, a career counselor at Kirkwood, said Tuesday's fair attracted employers who were looking for quality applicants.
"GE Capital has 50 positions to fill," Pound said. "Alegent Health, which represents nine hospitals in Nebraska, is looking to fill a wide range of health care positions.
"The opportunities are out there if you're willing to go where the jobs are."
