Mapfre S.A. Leads Wednesday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 4.41%

OLDWICK, N.J., Nov 13, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- AAME | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 638.67 (-4.41%). Of the 15 A.M. Best stock indexes, one rose and 14 declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Mapfre S.A. (+8.26%) and CRM Holdings (+6.30%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Atlantic American Corp. (-30.00%) and Gainsco (-27.03%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Life Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 623.24 (-4.46%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Mapfre S.A. (+8.26%) and Scor S.E. (+5.02%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Prudential plc (-12.59%) and Swiss Reinsurance (-7.98%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1159.58 (+0.22%). Leading the AMBAP were Sompo Japan Insurance (+2.39%) and Dongbu Insurance Co. (+1.80%). Trailing the AMBAP were LIG Insurance Co. (-6.07%) and China Insurance International Holdings (-6.00%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 820.64 (-3.14%). Leading the AMBGR were Mapfre S.A. (+8.26%) and Scor S.E. (+5.02%). Trailing the AMBGR were XL Capital (-18.96%) and Swiss Reinsurance (-7.98%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 886.84 (-2.77%). Leading the AMBGB were Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (+0.52%) and Benfield Group (+0.29%). Trailing the AMBGB were eHealth Inc. (-5.59%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (-4.93%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 449.01 (-4.23%). Leading the AMBGML were Hannover Rueckversicherungs AG (+3.84%) and RSA Insurance Group plc (+2.25%). Trailing the AMBGML were Atlantic American Corp. (-30.00%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (-13.97%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 964.83 (-2.34%). Leading the AMBGNL were Mapfre S.A. (+8.26%) and CRM Holdings (+6.30%). Trailing the AMBGNL were Gainsco (-27.03%) and XL Capital (-18.96%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 520.18 (-7.70%). Leading the AMBGL were Munich Re (+0.60%) and Cattolica Assicurazioni S.p.A. (+0.60%). Trailing the AMBGL were Phoenix Cos. (-24.80%) and Genworth Financial (-18.55%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 953.82 (-3.05%). Leading the AMBUPC were CRM Holdings (+6.30%) and 21st Century Holding Co. (+0.90%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Gainsco (-27.03%) and XL Capital (-18.96%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 139.41 (-7.63%). Leading the AMBUML were American National Insurance (-0.19%) and HCC Insurance Holdings (-0.55%). Trailing the AMBUML were Atlantic American Corp. (-30.00%) and Hartford Financial Services Group (-13.97%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 552.22 (-9.97%). Leading the AMBUL were Nationwide Financial Services (-0.61%) and National Western Life Insurance (-1.53%). Trailing the AMBUL were Phoenix Cos. (-24.80%) and Genworth Financial (-18.55%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 576.70 (-8.14%). Leading the AMBULH were Nationwide Financial Services (-0.61%) and National Western Life Insurance (-1.53%). Trailing the AMBULH were Phoenix Cos. (-24.80%) and Genworth Financial (-18.55%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 601.76 (-6.24%). Leading the AMBUH were Triple-S Management Corp. (-1.67%) and Aetna (-2.24%). Trailing the AMBUH were Unum Group (-10.31%) and Aflac Inc. (-8.09%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 867.40 (-2.80%). Leading the AMBUB were Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (+0.52%) and Aon (-0.60%). Trailing the AMBUB were eHealth Inc. (-5.59%) and Marsh & McLennan Cos. (-4.93%).
