Nov 13, 2008 -- Cord Blood America, Inc. (OTCBB: CBAI), the umbilical cord blood stem cell preservation company is focused on bringing the life saving potential of stem cells to families nationwide and internationally, said today that a letter to shareholders from CEO Matthew Schissler has been posted on the Company's website. The letter explains some of the positive scientific and economic implications of the potential enhanced stem cell research initiatives proposed by the new Obama Administration.
On Sunday, November 9, 2008, John Podesta, who is leading President Elect Barack Obama's transition team, told Fox News (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,449164,00.html):
"We're looking at -- again, in virtually every agency to see where we can move forward, whether that's on energy transformation, on improving health care, on stem cell research.
There's a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we'll see the president do that ..."
Mr. Schissler commented, "Because of this interview, there seems to be a rejuvenated and heightened awareness to stem cells and the philosophy change that is anticipated from our President Elect. It is my hope that, through a series of communicative letters to shareholders and families alike, that CBAI can provide valuable information from both a macroeconomic perspective, as well as a direct relation to the individual."
"I am often asked the question: 'What does this mean for Cord Blood America?'" Mr. Schissler said. "Families ask us: 'What does this mean for my family, should I store stem cells, what are the differences between embryonic and adult stem cells, and what does the research mean to our medical community and our economy?'"
"We believe the letter that was posted today and which can be accessed at http://www.cordblood-america.com will help answer some of these questions," Cord Blood America's CEO said. "In summary, we believe that an infusion of capital into stem cell research and development will lead to more therapies being commercialized, a higher percentage of families benefiting from these therapies and, subsequently, a higher percentage of families choosing to store stem cells. We believe this is a significant positive for both stem cell companies and our shareholders."

Its objective is to be active in all three of the following segments: Investment Banking, Trading and Principal Investments, and Asset Management and Securities Services.
Nov 13, 2008 -- International Stem Cell Corporation (OTCBB: ISCO). In the emerging field of regenerative medicine one topic that has earned its fair share of notoriety is the issue of embryonic stem cell research. Stem cells are characterized by the ability to renew themselves through cell division and differentiate into a diverse range of specialized cell types. Since stem cells can be grown and transformed into specialized cells with characteristics consistent with various tissue such as muscles or nerves, their use in medical therapies has been prized. The goal of any stem cell therapy is to repair damaged tissue that can't heal itself, which might be accomplished by transplanting stem cells into damaged areas and directing them to grow new, healthy tissue.
However, a widespread controversy exists over human embryonic stem cell research emanating from certain techniques used in their creation and usage. The practice is controversial because, using current methods, starting a stem cell line requires the destruction of a human embryo. The pro-life movement argues that a human embryo is a human life and is therefore entitled to protection.
Fortunately, there is a silver lining. "Through a procedure known as parthenogenesis, an unfertilized human egg can be chemically induced to form a tiny cluster of cells from which a stem cell line can be created, thereby solving the ethical problem of using fertilized human embryos," explains Mr. Kenneth C. Aldrich, CEO of International Stem Cell Corporation, the only company to generate functional pluripotent stem cells, (that is, stem cells that have the ability to turn into any type of cell or tissue), through parthenogenesis.
Recently, the company reported that by using its proprietary technique, cells from a single donor could be matched to general genetic patterns of hundreds of millions of patients. Since a single line of these cells may eliminate immune rejection issues in large segments of the population, parthenogenetic stem cells will be enormously valuable as a treatment of choice for diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. "Practically speaking," says Mr. Aldrich, "if stem cells could be made to grow into tissues and organs, waiting lists for transplant recipients would become a thing of the past."
Nov 12, 2008 -- Universal Detection Technology (OTCBB: UNDT/Frankfurt: PO8), a developer of early-warning monitoring technologies to protect people from bioterrorism and other infectious health threats and provider of counter-terrorism consulting and training services, today issued an analysis of the rise of "suspicious powder mailings" as well as reports of a fatality caused by inhalation anthrax in the United Kingdom.
In the last month more than 30 letters containing a suspicious powder were mailed to Chase bank branches and federal banking regulators' offices in nine cities. According to a law enforcement official, the letters were mailed to Chase bank branches in or near Atlanta, Chicago, Columbus, Ohio, Dallas, Denver, Newark, N.J., New York City, Oklahoma City and Washington.
The FBI has arrested a 66-year-old US national suspected of mailing more than 120 packages marked "anthrax" to media outlets. The white powder was found to be harmless, said the FBI, but recipients of the packages were told to not touch the substance and report the instance as quickly as possible. The packages were sent along with a compact disc titled "Anthrax: Shock & Awe Terror," and decorated with the image of former secretary of state Colin Powell.
The FBI also released a report that it had investigated over 900 threats made with envelopes containing white powder probably meant to look like anthrax. "Interesting enough, over the past two-years, the FBI has responded to over 900 of these threat letters," said FBI spokesman Rich Kolko. "Even sending a hoax letter is a serious crime," he added.
Earlier this month a man in London died of anthrax after inhaling anthrax spores while handling imported animal skins. The death sparked a health alert in London and the Health Protection Agency is examining the home and workshop of the victim. This is the second incident in the last 2 years where a drum maker in the U.K. has died after exposure to animal hide tainted with anthrax.
UNDT's anthrax detection equipment has been extensively used by first responders and private industry throughout the country. The equipment has been evaluated by the U.S. DOD as well as the United Kingdom military. The equipment can notify a first responder of the presence of anthrax in as little as three minutes. UNDT's BSM-2000 system is an autonomous airborne detector of bacterial spores. The system samples the ambient air and can notify a first responder of elevated levels of bacterial spores which is a typical signature of an airborne anthrax attack.
"The rise in the incidence of suspicious powder scares and mailings usually correlates with a rise in the levels of public insecurity. This may be caused either by international or domestic terrorist incidents or more recently by the financial crisis," said Mr. Jacques Tizabi, UNDT's Chief Executive Officer. "Our nation's first responders need to be ever vigilant and treat each incident as an actual attack and prosecute the perpetrators of these hoaxes," he added.

Nov 12, 2008 -- VIASPACE Inc. (OTCBB: VSPC), announced today that that its VIASPACE Energy business unit has shipped a HS-1000 VIASENSOR, a state of the art, laser-based humidity detection instrument, to a new customer in Taiwan. The order was placed by VIASPACE Taiwan partner Hephas Energy on behalf of a major Taiwanese government research laboratory for hydrogen fuel cell development applications.
"We are happy to have another VIASENSOR instrument placed in world-class laboratory," reported VIASPACE CEO Dr. Carl Kukkonen. "We are gaining a global presence and worldwide reputation for leadership in humidity measurements. The laser-based VIASENSOR is much faster and easier to use with lower maintenance than the conventional chilled mirror instrument. A leading Japanese automotive manufacturer extensively tested the VIASENSOR against a chilled mirror and a capacitive device in static and dynamic humidity streams. The VIASENSOR won and the automotive manufacturer has purchased three systems. Our sales force regularly demonstrates the VIASENSOR advantages to potential customers."
The VIASENSOR makes real-time measurements of humidity levels in industrial and automotive gas streams for environmental monitoring and process control. Precise humidity levels are crucial in many industrial and commercial applications including steelmaking, fuel cells, baking and precision automotive exhaust measurements.
The performance of hydrogen fuel cells using a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) depends on the moisture level of the membrane. The membrane only conducts protons when it is hydrated or moist. The moisture is provided by water vapor in the incoming air or hydrogen stream. The VIASENSOR HS-1000 provides real-time measurements of the amount of water vapor in these gas streams. It is the only humidity sensor that provides in-situ, continuous and fast-responding dew point measurement.
About VIASPACE
Originally founded in 1998 with the objective of transforming proven space and defense technologies from NASA and the Department of Defense into hardware and software solutions that solve today's complex problems, VIASPACE benefits from important patent and software licenses from Caltech, which manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. In addition, VIASPACE has recently acquired a profitable company, which also has a license to grow a fast-growing grass for animal feed and as a feedstock for biofuels.
