Lt. Commander Mark Bramlett of the Illinois State Police said this morning that its SWAT Team, a tactical response team, was used to get into the man's home on Armand Drive in Cahokia. The area is near Camp Jackson Road, not far from Cahokia Park.
"The St. Louis County detectives are talking with him now," Bramlett said at 9 a.m. today. "He has to waive extradition" before he can be taken back to Missouri.
Detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department will be asking to take the man back to Missouri for further questioning, Bramlett said.
Bramlett said he had no information on who the man is or what led St. Louis County Police to him.
The St. Louis County detectives are now interviewing people connected to the man, Illinois State Police said.
They arrested another man overnight. No further details were available on that arrest.
The arrest comes just a day after Steak 'n Shake offered a $50,000 reward for the arrest and successful prosecution of whoever killed the employees.
Waitress Tammy L. Cantrell, 44, and cook Mark L. Gerstner, 24, were found slain inside the eatery in what police said appeared to have been a robbery.
Anyone with information is asked to contact St. Louis County police at 314-889-2341 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
