The Hartford Courant, Conn., Java column: Redistributing Wealth In The Holiday Spirit

Nov 14, 2008 (The Hartford Courant - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- UTX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The giving season has begun, with a couple of well-known ladies in the area getting that giving going.

Amy Jaffe Barzach, founder and director emeritus of Boundless Playgrounds, was still basking in the afterglow of being named Wednesday as the winner in Martha Stewart's "Dreamers Into Doers" Awards competition.

Jaffe Barzach, whose idea for obstacle-free, all-inclusive playgrounds has grown throughout the United States and Canada, enjoyed lots of perks -- chauffeurs, a bit of a makeover and the spotlight -- during her three-day stay in New York. By beating 2,200 candidates for the award, she also won a one-week vacation for life at a Wyndham Hotel each year; computer and office equipment for her new business endeavors; a meeting with poet, author and activist Maya Angelou; and $10,000.

She's not keeping the money.

"I thought it was the perfect closure for me as I step down to give the money to Boundless Playgrounds," said Jaffe Barzach as she headed back to her West Hartford home Thursday after a speaking engagement in Michigan.

"But the vacations we're keeping," said the mother of three, who stepped down from Boundless Playgrounds in September. "It looks like Disney World may be the first one we take advantage of, but we have to sit down as a family to discuss where everyone wants to go."

And in the spirit of the soon-to-be-season, Renee [Falcone]DiNino, radio personality at WHCN-FM ("The River" 105.9), has proved once again it is not what you know but who you know.

The many times she has interviewed Trans-Siberian Orchestra founder, conductor and composer Paul O'Neill paid off -- in a $5,000 donation from him and his orchestra.

"He just does these random donations," she said about the "Random Act of Kindness" cash that was forked over. "When he told me The River was going to receive the donation, I thought he was kidding."

The organizations that DiNino chose to reap the benefits were Food Share, Operation Fuel, the Salvation Army Marshall House, the House of Bread, The Tabor House, The Interval House and Protectors of Animals.

And for those who need something more visual to feel the spirit ...

Head to Constitution Plaza today at 10:30 a.m., where Santa Claus, WDRC-FM (102.9) host Jerry Kristafer and a slew of volunteers -- and a crane -- will be hoisting a 30-foot evergreen into its stand as part of the holiday decor there.

Bring an unwrapped toy for the U.S. Marine Reserves' Toys for Tots program if you are coming to watch.

The tree is part of the plaza scene for the Greater Hartford Arts Council's 45th annual Festival of Light, a tradition that will have several changes this year, including the addition of Santa Saturday sessions for those who believe, new media sponsors, and a new cause.

Sponsored by Title Sponsors Capital Properties, Connecticut Light & Power, United Technologies Corp. and Mohegan Sun, the festival will be doing dual duty this year by not only being something pretty to look at, thanks to 250,000 lights, but also as a venue to make donations to Toys for Tots.

The 45th lighting program, scheduled for Nov. 28 at 5:30 p.m., will feature Brad Davis of WDRC-AM (1360) and Ericka Arias, Channel 61 news anchor, as co-hosts.
