The luncheon offered members of all military branches a full-course meal, dessert, special presentations, and recognition and gratitude from members of the Hampton Roads community.
"It's the time of year again where we gather to take a moment to honor the men and women who go forth to protect our way of life," said GEICO's Vice President for Region 7, Joe Thomas. "They serve our country proudly 365 days per year, and we can't help but stand in awe of their dedication."
Service members from 35 military commands stationed throughout Hampton Roads attended the luncheon, which according to a message from GEICO Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Tony Nicely, was designed to thank members of the armed services for their service and sacrifices.
Carl Vinson Sailors, led by Command Master Chief (AW/SW) Glenn Mallo, donned their dress blues for the event.
Along with the delectable cuisine, "Gold Eagle" Sailors enjoyed special recognitions, appreciation remarks, and a Prisoner of War and Missing in Action presentation.
Sailors in attendance said they appreciated the recognition and gratitude toward their military service.
"We have all been working really hard to make sure we get Carl Vinson ready for sea on time," said Yeoman Seaman Christopher Poss. "The whole crew has been putting forth a lot of effort, and we are very focused on optimal production right now. It was nice to be able to take a short break from that over an awesome meal, and to see how much we're really appreciated by the local community."
USS Carl Vinson is currently undergoing its scheduled refueling complex overhaul (RCOH) at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard. The RCOH is an extensive yard period that all Nimitz-class aircraft carriers go through near the mid-point of their 50-year life cycle.
During RCOH Carl Vinson's nuclear fuel will be replenished and the ship's services and infrastructure will be upgraded to make her the most state-of-the-art aircraft carrier in the fleet and prepare for another 25 years or more of service.
