In the face of a slumping economy, Amazon.com announced this week that it will hire 1,800 temporary employees for the holidays at its distribution facility in Humboldt Industrial Park.
The Internet retail giant will hold a job fair at the facility today from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., according to Patricia Smith, Amazon.com director of corporate communications.
Also, interviews are being conducted for the positions at Integrity Staffing, 129 N. Warren St., West Hazleton. Interested applicants may call 866-885-6277.
Smith said part-time and full-time temporary positions on several shifts will be available.
"We prefer candidates who have general warehouse experience, and we require a high-school diploma and (that applicants are) at least 18 years of age," Smith said.
When the new fulfillment center at 550 Oak Ridge Road opened a few months ago, the firm indicated it would hire 1,100 permanent workers.
Smith said Amazon.com does not "disclose our current hiring headcounts, but we hope to hire hundreds of people from the Hazleton area to help us throughout the holiday season."
