Nov 14, 2008 (Billings Gazette - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- SVU | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Nov. 14--Despite tight credit and a down economy, Albertsons has started remodeling and expanding the last of its six Billings stores.

By spring, the store at 3127 Grand Ave. will have a 10,000-square-foot addition to the west and a new interior look. The store was last remodeled in 1999, soon after Albertsons purchased Buttreys Food & Drug.

Albertsons stores in this region are owned by Supervalu, a Minneapolis-based Fortune 500 company that is the third-largest U.S. grocery retailer.

Albertsons spokeswoman Donna Eggers said Supervalu remodels its stores every seven years.

"So many Montana stores were Buttreys, and they really hadn't been redone since we acquired them," she said. "Also, the Albertsons stores are the oldest in Supervalu's fleet."

After the addition, the Billings store will have 52,261 square feet. The meat, produce and bakery departments will shift over and expand into the new space. The remodel also will include a take-and-bake pizza shop.

"We want to fulfill our customers' desire to make meal planning and preparation easy," said Chuck Cremer, Albertsons vice president of operations for Eastern Montana and Wyoming.

Of the six Billings stores, two are new stores and three have already been remodeled. Outside Billings, many more are on the corporate schedule for a makeover. "We have 30 groceries in Montana, so by mid-2009, 17 of those stores will be remodeled," Eggers said.

And by next spring, another 26 grocery stores throughout Idaho, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming also will be remodeled.

The average store upgrade costs $1 million to $3.5 million. The expansion at Grand and Rehberg will cost more than $3.5 million, and the company has committed more than $45 million to remodel 17 of its 30 stores in Montana in 2008 and 2009, Eggers said.
