"It is just a fascinating book that I recommend for the fourth grade on up. And it's available at our Fort Wayne Museum of Art.
"And I just love 'How Many?' It's by Ron Van Der Meer and is paper sculpture -- all math-based, geometry, actually. I get entranced by its beauty, by its art. I've been giving it as wedding gifts because it is so gorgeous.
"Now in pop-up is Dr. Seuss' 'Horton Hears a Who!.' It is full of visual wonders; you read the story, then delight in its beauty. David Carter, creator of the book, says, 'It is a pop-up book for children of all ages.' I find it so interesting!
"(Robert) Sabuda, who has done many pop-up books and cards, has created an 'Encyclopedia Prehistorica' on dinosaurs. So many of us are fascinated by dinosaurs; I had a graphic artist paint one on a wall in my classroom, and the education students all remember it and, of course, the mastodon. This book of Sabuda's is so well done.
"A book filled with photographic fantasies is 'First Snow in the Woods,' by husband and wife Carl Sams and Jean Stoick. It is made up of exquisite photographs of winter approaching as animals prepare and trees change.
"I am not a winter person, but this book is a treasure. And the authors/photographers have donated many copies of their book to schools in their area.
"DK Online is an example of multimedia people combining with Google and creating wonderful images. There is an excellent series on science topics. The latest one is on oceans. 'Earth Matters' is an encyclopedia of ecology, with gorgeous pictures. It's very up-to-date and would make a wonderful birthday gift.
"And the last is 'Gone Wild,' by David McLimans. It's concerned with endangered animals and has the most beautiful pictures! It has won all kinds of awards and is visually extraordinary."
Janet S. Jordan is director of the Education Curriculum/Computer Lab at IPFW.
