Earlier this year, EnerDel announced it would locate its headquarters in Noblesville and was looking for a central Indiana location for a manufacturing plant that would employ as many as 500 people.
When EnerDel was formed in 2004, Delphi Corp. owned 19.5 percent of the company. That interest has since been sold, but a relationship still exists.
Kokomo has the space available for a new manufacturing operation within the Delphi complex.
The Indiana Economic Development Corp. is working with EnerDel on a future Indiana site and will be the conduit for the first step, a request for information.
"We've made ourselves known," Debbie Cook, Kokomo's director of development, said of the EnerDel factory. "We're ready to respond."
Cook said the request for information normally includes proximity to a railroad line, airport and facility needs.
She said the second request is normally for more specific information.
"We're in regular contact with the state," Cook said. "We're on top of it. Right now, [EnerDel] may be in a holding pattern."
Mitch Frazier, spokesman for the Indiana Economic Development Corp., said Friday EnerDel's current focus is on getting production started at the Noblesville and Indianapolis plants.
"They have not started the site selection process for the third plant," he said. "That probably won't begin until the other plants are in production."
Frazier said it will be months and not weeks before the site selection process starts.
Earlier this year Frazier said the state is working with EnerDel and assisting the company on a possible location for the manufacturing site. He said the state doesn't steer a company to any location.
The state has offered EnerDel up to $7.125 million in performance-based tax credits and $58,000 in training grants for the creation of up to 850 jobs total in the state.
EnerDel will be making lithium-ion batteries for use in hybrid, plug-in electric and electric vehicles. EnerDel recently secured a $70 million contract to supply batteries to a Norwegian company making the Think electric vehicle for sale in Europe.
