He also turned himself into his own boss.
Crear opened DC Auto, a used car dealer and service shop, Nov. 1 at 612 S. 6th St. in Burlington.
"I worked at Harley-Davidson for five years in finance and sales," Crear said. "But I left in October. I just wanted to own a dealership."
Crear, 28, said ever since he was 16, the glamorized year when kids get their first car, his love of cars took off.
"I've had lots of different vehicles since," he said with a laugh. "I just love cars."
Crear said he knows the previous owner of the building and lot where his dealership is located, which helped him immensely with his plans to start DC Auto. The building has a history of being a used-car dealer, and a laundromat, before it returned as a used-car dealer.
No matter what the history of the building is, Crear said he plans to reach certain customers.
"I want to keep cars affordable," he said. "I know I will have a few nicer, luxury-like cars, but I want to try and keep the price under $7,000." His customers may be like he was years ago -- that 16-year-old looking for the first car or those people who are needing a second car for a variety of reasons, including having a more economical car.
"Even though gas is coming down, people still remember when it was near $4 a gallon," he said. "I know that hurts."
His experience in selling motorcycles should help, he admitted, but said there are philosophical differences between selling cars and motorcycles.
"Motorcycles can be a luxury purchase," he said. "Cars are more a part of everyday life. With a Harley, people know exactly what they want, but with cars, it can be more about the money."
Crear has combed the regional car auctions filling his lot with a little bit of everything from economical cars, sedans, Jeeps, pickups and the occasional upscale SUV.
"I want to have a little bit of everything," he said.
And if Crear does not have it on his lot, he said he will try to find those certain cars, colors or options from his providers.
Crear said his cars come with a warranty and he has on-site financing available.
Not only does DC Auto sell cars, repairs are also available with its full-service shop. Crear said his mechanics are willing to take on all repairs. Another one of the employees is Crear's wife, Annie.
"I want this to feel like a family business," he said.
