Researchers at the university, led by professor Shinya Yamanaka, were among the first last year to publish papers on producing induced pluripotent stem cells - also called iPS cells.
With the capability of turning into nerves and muscles, these universal cells hold great promise in advancing regenerative medicine.
Studying various iPS cells is also seen helping efforts to gain a better understanding of diseases and to develop breakthrough drugs.
