Atlantic American Corp. Leads Monday's AMBG as Global Insurance Index Declines 4.35%

OLDWICK, N.J., Nov 18, 2008 (A. M. Best via COMTEX) -- HIG | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The AMBG closed Monday, Nov. 17, at 619.46 (-4.35%). All 15 A.M. Best stock indexes declined. Leading A.M. Best's Global Insurance Composite Index (AMBG) were Atlantic American Corp. (+26.76%) and SeaBright Insurance Holdings (+9.16%). Trailing the list of global insurance stocks were Hartford Financial Services Group (-26.80%) and MetLife (-21.00%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index led the sector indexes, with the U.S. Life Insurance Index trailing the list. In descending order, the A.M. Best Insurance Stock Indexes closed at:

The European Insurance Index (AMBEUR) closed at 612.30 (-3.20%)%. Leading the AMBEUR were Catlin Group (+4.92%) and Scor S.E. (+2.97%). Trailing the AMBEUR were Aegon N.V. (-10.41%) and Brit Insurance Holdings (-9.03%).

The Asia/Pacific Insurance Index (AMBAP) closed at 1083.38 (-0.37%). Leading the AMBAP were Sompo Japan Insurance (+8.47%) and Fuji Fire & Marine Insurance (+4.79%). Trailing the AMBAP were QBE Insurance Group Ltd. (-4.01%) and Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance (-3.67%).

The Global Reinsurance Index (AMBGR) closed at 790.87 (-4.34%). Leading the AMBGR were Allied World Assurance (+5.26%) and Catlin Group (+4.92%). Trailing the AMBGR were White Mountains Insurance Group (-12.23%) and Aegon N.V. (-10.41%).

The Global Broker Index (AMBGB) closed at 909.98 (-1.49%). Leading the AMBGB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+7.38%) and Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (+0.96%). Trailing the AMBGB were eHealth Inc. (-6.13%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (-4.85%).

The Global Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBGML) closed at 441.01 (-4.65%). Leading the AMBGML were Atlantic American Corp. (+26.76%) and RSA Insurance Group plc (-0.76%). Trailing the AMBGML were Hartford Financial Services Group (-26.80%) and Assurant (-10.36%).

The Global Nonlife Insurance Index (AMBGNL) closed at 938.02 (-3.15%). Leading the AMBGNL were SeaBright Insurance Holdings (+9.16%) and Presidential Life Corp. (+8.82%). Trailing the AMBGNL were Eastern Insurance Holdings (-13.33%) and White Mountains Insurance Group (-12.23%).

The Global Life Insurance Index (AMBGL) closed at 494.27 (-6.31%). Leading the AMBGL were Independence Holding Co. (+2.94%) and American Equity Inv. Life (+2.73%). Trailing the AMBGL were MetLife (-21.00%) and Conseco (-18.28%).

The U.S. Property/Casualty Index (AMBUPC) closed at 935.11 (-3.83%). Leading the AMBUPC were SeaBright Insurance Holdings (+9.16%) and 21st Century Holding Co. (+6.00%). Trailing the AMBUPC were Eastern Insurance Holdings (-13.33%) and White Mountains Insurance Group (-12.23%).

The U.S. Multi-Line Insurance Index (AMBUML) closed at 139.53 (-9.17%). Leading the AMBUML were Atlantic American Corp. (+26.76%) and Horace Mann Educators (-1.73%). Trailing the AMBUML were Hartford Financial Services Group (-26.80%) and Assurant (-10.36%).

The U.S. Life Insurance Index (AMBUL) closed at 494.09 (-11.12%). Leading the AMBUL were Presidential Life Corp. (+8.82%) and Independence Holding Co. (+2.94%). Trailing the AMBUL were MetLife (-21.00%) and Conseco (-18.28%).

The U.S. Life and Health/HMO Insurance Index (AMBULH) closed at 541.26 (-8.17%). Leading the AMBULH were Presidential Life Corp. (+8.82%) and Independence Holding Co. (+2.94%). Trailing the AMBULH were MetLife (-21.00%) and Conseco (-18.28%).

The U.S. Health and HMO Index (AMBUH) closed at 591.04 (-5.32%). Leading the AMBUH were Triple-S Management Corp. (+1.92%) and Aetna (-2.27%). Trailing the AMBUH were Unum Group (-9.84%) and Aflac Inc. (-7.40%).

The U.S. Insurance Brokers Index (AMBUB) closed at 890.54 (-1.64%). Leading the AMBUB were Maiden Holdings Ltd. (+7.38%) and Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. (+0.96%). Trailing the AMBUB were eHealth Inc. (-6.13%) and AmTrust Financial Services Inc. (-4.85%).
