First it was ESPN's Lou Holtz giving Keenum a helmet sticker after the Cougars' sophomore quarterback threw for 402 yards -- his school-record 11th straight game of at least 300 passing yards -- and a career-high six touchdown passes (not to mention rushing for another).
Even the shouting heads on the network's Around the Horn program dove into Keenum's performance.
Then it was the Walter Camp Foundation taking notice, naming Keenum its National Offensive Player of the Week.
Of course C-USA named him its Offensive Player of the Week, too, part of a clean Cougar sweep of the league's weekly awards -- sophomore cornerback Loyce Means (three interceptions against Tulsa) was named Defensive Player of the Week and Tyron Carrier was the Special Teams Player of the Week after he returned a kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown.
Keenum, not exactly the most comfortable guy when in the spotlight, was happy to get all the national attention for only one reason.
"Anytime that the University of Houston's name gets out there, that's a good thing," Keenum said. "We don't get enough of the national publicity that I think we deserve. Anyway that's possible (getting publicity), that's cool."
Elite eight
The Nassau County Sports Commission announced that University of Houston senior Mark Hafner was among its eight semi-finalists for the 2008 John Mackey Award, given to the player who "best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics, and community values of NFL Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey."
The 2008 winner will be announced on Dec. 11 at the Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show and presented at the Nassau County Sports Commission Annual Awards Dinner on April 27, 2009.
Young gun
It didn't take junior guard Aubrey Coleman long to make an impression. After averaging 15.7 points in three games, and 18.5 points in two wins, Coleman was named Conference USA co-Rookie of the Week. Coleman, a 6-4 transfer from Southwest Mississippi Community College, shared the award with Tyreke Evans (Memphis).
Give me Liberty Bowl...
As bowl time approaches, the so-called experts have the Cougars headed in a few different directions.
Neither of ESPN's experts have the Cougars in the Liberty Bowl. Mark Schlabach has East Carolina representing C-USA and Bruce Feldman has Tulsa (both playing Vanderbilt). Both have the Cougars in the GMAC Bowl.
College Football News has the Cougars in the Jan. 2 Liberty Bowl, where they will play Ole Miss. But then they also have the Cougars playing TCU in the Dec. 31 Armed Forces Bowl. Huh?
CBS Sportsline.com has the Cougars headed to Memphis for a Liberty Bowl matchup with Kentucky. It also has Tulsa going to the Texas Bowl (playing Western Michigan) and Rice heading up to Fort Worth to play Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl.
On the run
Freshman Stephanie Aldea is headed to the 2008 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, which will be held Nov. 24 at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind.
Aldea qualified after finishing 19th (21:31.83) in the 6K race at the South Central Regional on Nov. 15. She is the first UH female individual to qualify since Christy Bench finished 94th at the 1994 NCAA Championships.
Tourney begins
The Cougars (18-11 overall, 10-6 in C-USA) are seeded fourth in the C-USA Championships in Memphis, Tenn., garnering them a first-round bye. The Cougars will play at 2 p.m. Friday, facing the winner of the match between No. 5 Tulsa and No. 12 East Carolina.
The C-USA tournament concludes Sunday with the championship match, which will air live (2 p.m.) on CBS College Sports.
