Here are some fun Thanksgiving facts from the National Restaurant Association:

--One in 10 Americans will eat Thanksgiving dinner out.

--Fifty-three percent of all Americans will supplement their meals with ready-to-eat takeout items.

--Households without children are more likely to dine out than those with kids.

--Men are more likely than women to eat at a restaurant on Thanksgiving.

Pie alternative

Smucker has introduced an ice cream topping just in time for Thanksgiving.

Look for Pumpkin Spice Spoonable Topping in grocery stores. It's a limited-edition flavor to celebrate the Orrville company's 60 years of making ice cream toppings.

If you don't have the time to bake a pumpkin pie, try a pumpkin spice ice cream sundae instead, or use it as a seasonal topping for cheesecake.

Help is on the radio

Cooks looking for last-minute help on Thanksgiving can call in to public radio's The Splendid Table show from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Turkey Confidential 2008.

Host Lynne Rossetto Kasper will be joined by Nora Ephron, a film director, novelist and playwright; style expert Isaac Mizrahi; Cook's Illustrated editor Christopher Kimball; wine entrepreneur Joshua Wesson; and Gourmet's road food duo Jane and Michael Stern.

Phone lines will be open nationwide. Call 800-537-5252 to ask a question.

The program will be simulcast live at http://www.splendidtable.com.

Say cheese, please

Middlefield Original Cheese Cooperative in Geauga County will hold its preholiday sale with discounts on cheese.

The sale is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. All cheese will be 20 percent off. There will be a 10 percent discount on all cheese and meat trays and on orders for Christmas gift boxes and baskets.

There also will be Amish baked goods, candy, crafts and rugs.

The cheese co-op is at 16942 Kinsman Road (state Route 87 just east of Route 528) in Middlefield Township. Call 440-632-5567 for information.

Rolling along

Success just keeps rolling on for Bath Township's Sushi on the Roll.

Its sushi and noodle bowls are now available at area Acme Fresh Markets and soon will be in all Buehler's grocery stores. That's in addition to being the official sushi supplier for Cleveland Browns Stadium and the Akron Aeros.

Sushi on the Roll is at 3925 Embassy Parkway.

Masterful recipes

Church of the Master United Methodist in Akron is selling a new cookbook, Our Recipes, as a fundraiser for its youth group. Its 100 pages are packed with family-friendly casseroles, desserts and appetizers.

The book is $10 and can be purchased at the church at 800 E. Market St., or by calling 330-376-2141.

Cupboard check

Nestle USA has recalled some Nesquik Strawberry Powder because it may contain small fragments of aluminum.

Two production codes have been recalled for the 21.8-ounce plastic container. The recalled product has codes 82255880 or 82265880 printed on the bottom of the container, with a best-by date of August 2010. The strawberry drink mix was distributed throughout the country.

Consumers should return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund. For questions about the recall, call Nestle Consumer Services Center at 888-637-4345.

'Semi-Homemade' host

Sandra Lee, host of Food Network's Semi-Homemade, will be in Lyndhurst at Joseph-Beth Booksellers on Monday to sign copies of her three new cookbooks.

The Sandra Lee Sweet & Simple Bake Sale will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m., with proceeds going to the nonprofit Share Our Strength, which helps feed hungry children in America. Raffle tickets will be sold for $3, with prizes including grocery gift cards and other items.

For Sandra Lee's Sweet Soiree from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the Bronte Bistro in the bookstore will feature Jose Cuervo cocktails and menu items featuring Lee's recipes at special prices. There will be Johnsonville sausage samples and other giveaways. Lee will discuss and sign books at both events and give cooking tips.

A book purchase is required to get a ticket to stand in line for the signing.

Joseph-Beth is in Legacy Village, 24519 Cedar Road, Lyndhurst. Call 216-691-7000 for information or visit http://www.josephbeth.com.
