In Rochester, he's found music, but as to the hills, well, "There are no mountains here," said Krennmayr, a medical student from Salzburg, Austria, studying at Mayo Clinic.
Music, though, has been no problem for Krennmayr since he found the Rochester Music Men barbershop chorus. At 24, he is the youngest member of the group as it prepares for a concert Saturday at People of Hope Church.
"He just walked in here one night," said Del Ryberg, membership chairman of Rochester Music Men. "You'd like to find a hundred like him. He's one of these young guys who learns music fast."
Perhaps that's because Krennmayr has a singing, in addition to medical, background.
"I sing in a five-person a cappella group back home and I wanted to do something during my stay here," he said. A Google search turned up Rochester Music Men, and Krennmayr decided to give the group a try.
What he found is a traditional American form of singing that is relatively unknown in central Europe. "The barbershop organization has people in Germany, but we don't have anybody in Austria," Ryberg said.
The vocal group Krennmayr is a member of in Salzburg consists of fellow medical students who sing pop music.
"It's not as serious as this," Krennmayr said. "There are not as many performances -- usually one a year at best."
The repertoire is also obviously different. Of the dozen songs being rehearsed by Rochester Music Men for the upcoming concert, Krennmayr was familiar with only one: "Hello Mary Lou."
The others, including "Yes Sir, That's My Baby,""When the Red Red Robin Comes Bob Bob Bobbin' Along" and "Get Me to the Church on Time," are foreign to him.
So, by the way, is his method of getting to rehearsals on time. Asked for the biggest difference between life in Rochester and in Austria, Krennmayr said, "Without a car here, you cant get anywhere. Back home, I don't need one."
Krennmayr will return home in early December and hopes to finish his medical degree in two years. As a souvenir, he could take back some of the new musical arrangements he learned with the Music Men for his singing partners in Austria.
"Unfortunately," he said, "there are two girls in our group."
