Co-founded by Linda Fahrenbach, Florence Peery and Stacy Bayles in fall 2005 as "Survival Skills for Women," the 10-class workshops teach assertiveness, personal health, child management, money management, re-entry employment and other skills. The program was renamed "Life Skills For Women" this year.
"We're the strongest mentoring group for women in this county," Peery said. The program creates "more people wanting to serve their community," she said.
Councilman Mike Kincaid proposed the contribution.
"These women learn to improve their lives," he said. "I see a lot of layers of goodness here."
The request passed 5-1. Councilman Jeremy Lamar, who wants the council to have a written policy on food and beverage fund donations to civic organizations, voted no.
"I don't oppose your organization at all," Lamar said. He has voted against approval of contributions to the Lebanon Boys & Girls Club and the Boone County Family YMCA over lack of a donation policy.
The money will pay for workbooks, notebooks, small gifts to encourage the women to continue attending, and a graduation gift, Fahrenbach said. In-kind donations have come from Witham Health Services; Boone County Mental Health; Project Help: Boone County; Boone County Habitat for Humanity; the St. Vincent DePaul Society; CASA; Tablescapes; Wal-Mart and the Community Foundation of Boone County.
Each class lasts three hours. Participants must attend eight of the classes to graduate, Fahrenbach said.
"Many are single mothers who are struggling and having difficulty," she said.
Most of the students are from Lebanon; some have come from Jamestown and Thorntown, she said.
The program is free, Fahrenbach said. Graduates often recommend the program to new students, she said.
Two graduates are volunteers at The Caring Center, Fahrenbach said. Others have come back to help with classes and baby-sitting.
One graduate opened a day care center with afternoon and evening hours, giving mothers who work second shift another child care alternative.
Peery said the organization hopes to have Ivy Tech scholarships available for two graduates of next year's class.
