The report on Nikkei's website said that in India, Nissan Diesel planned to farm out truck production to Eicher Motors Ltd, which belongs to the Volvo group. It said Nissan Diesel was considering shipping engines and other components from Japan and assembling vehicles at Eicher's factory in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
It said that in the future the two companies might jointly develop engines and key components, and that Nissan Diesel might in the future import low-priced trucks made in India to Japan.
Eicher and Nissan Diesel's joint venture with Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor Corp are working together on ways to cultivate the Asian truck market, the report said. It said Nissan Diesel's expansion into India would be the first project under that initiative.
