"We want to let those who have supported us know we appreciate them," said Ernie Small, frontman for the Ernie Small Blues Band.
Small said a number of downtown businesses sponsored the Kentucky Blues Festival in August, where Grammy award-nominated rock/blues legend Johnny Winter and a host of local and regional musicians performed. Festival sponsors included Merrill Lynch, Brent Travelstead, National City Bank, Matt Baker, J.B. Distributors, David Broderick, Jack and Kim Sheidler and 440 Main.
"And we feel we can strengthen our event and bring in big-name artists, but we need continued support," Small said.
The event, which will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., will offer live music from a variety of artists from the society, including Small, Gary Graves, Ken Smith and a special artist from Tennessee, John Combs.
"We want to recognize those who've supported us," Small said. "There is a core of people that come out who are interested in this style of music."
The event will double as a way to get community feedback as society members start planning their 2009 event, Small said. He said they wanted to also give an open invitation to generate interest -- promoting this style of music and getting people excited about bringing quality blues acts to the community.
"We want more people involved in the planning of the event -- letting people have a voice in how we do it, the artists they want," he said.
A local affiliate of the Memphis-based Blues Foundation, the society is a network of blues musicians trying to broaden people's musical horizons by bringing not only local but national blues musicians to Bowling Green. In addition to the many things the society does -- like its education and history programs -- it also provides free jam sessions at WahBah Steelhorse Ranch restaurant every Sunday.
"Bowling Green has a a rich musical history," Small said. "We're not just promoting a party, but a historical and educational part of our community."
