Nov 19, 2008 (Bangkok Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- EBAY | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- eBay Inc, the world's largest online marketplace, is broadening its e-commerce network in Thailand by extending its reach into the northern provinces among individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises.

Allis Ghim, director of eBay Inc, said the company saw a great opportunity for e-commerce services in the northern provincial market, and aims to establish Chiang Mai as a merchant base.

Potential customers involve high quality products in the handicraft market, traditional arts, clothes, jewellery and gems.

eBay, in collaboration with Bangkok Bank, DHL and Shopping.co.th, yesterday announced plans for the Northern Thailand e-Commerce Summit 2008 in Chiang Mai to help individuals and SMEs scale up their businesses via the internet.

The event, from Dec 1 to 10, will provide a series of free educational seminars and workshops on how to develop successful online businesses and integrate e-commerce into their business models.

Based on figures from Thai state agencies, Ghim said that up to 16 percent of Thailand's 13.5 million internet users are located in Chiang Mai.

But only 2.2 percent of the local 25,000 SMEs trade online currently despite the fact that the strength of its manufacturing sources.

"With the summit, we aim to equip Thai entrepreneurs with the necessary knowledge and skills to market their products internationally with over 85 million eBay users worldwide," she said.

eBay's marketplace revenue rose 4 percent to US$ 1.38 billion in the third quarter of 2008. Of the total, 47 percent came from the United States operations and the remaining 53 percent from international businesses.

The total value of all successfully closed items on eBay's trading platforms was $14.28 billion, with 700 million new listings added to eBay.com worldwide in the third quarter.

Amid difficult global economic difficult times, Ghim still believes that eBay potentially will see higher business growth throughout this year and in 2009, thanks to rapidly growing online purchasing systems in Asia Pacific.

She said online purchasing by internet users in the region was 84 percent of total internet penetration, and 61 percent in Thailand alone, compared to 86 percent globally.

The company is on the verge of widening its online marketplace across its network in other provinces in Thailand in the future, said Ghim.
