The programme will enable passengers to receive their boarding passes electronically, through mobile phones or PDAs, which can then be scanned by TSA security officers at checkpoints, eliminating the need for paper boarding passes.
Paperless boarding passes will consist of a two-dimensional barcode with passenger and flight information to identify the customer. The barcodes will be scanned using mobile scanners to authenticate the pass.
Customers can choose to receive electronic boarding passes when checking-in using American Airlines' website. They will then receive an e-mail with an Internet link to their boarding pass.
Passengers who wish to check-in bags will be able to scan the boarding pass on their mobile phone or PDA screen at American Airlines self-service machines, ticket counters or curbside check-in facilities.
American Airlines has also introduced mobile boarding passes at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport and John Wayne Orange County Airport.
