There is no word yet on whether "illuminated" will translate to digital for Lamar Advertising. County rules don't distinguish between a conventional billboard and the new, flat-screen television-style signs that rotate advertisements as long as each advertisement holds for at least eight seconds.
The company must remove an old billboard on the lot, located on Murchison Road near the Shaw Heights community, before the new sign goes up. The old one needed to be removed because a business is expanding and needs the land the old sign stands on for its driveway.
Lamar's real estate manager, Lloyd Johnson, said last week a digital sign is a possibility, but no decision has been made final. He refused to answer questions Thursday after the meeting.
Inside the city limits last year, Lamar put up two digital billboards -- on Raeford Road and the All American Freeway -- that beam bright advertisements that change every eight seconds.
This summer, Fayetteville ordered a moratorium on the new billboards until it can study issues such as whether they distract drivers.
Lamar has sued the city to try to overturn the moratorium so it can place more digital signs.
County planners said Thursday they had consulted with the city on the billboard application. The city and county will discuss coming up with a set of billboard standards next month at their joint planning meeting.
