Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the United States of America Zhou Wenzhong flew into Laurel Thursday afternoon from Washington, D. C. with a layover in Jackson for a visit with Gov. Haley Barbour.
Don Ellen, who works in customer relations with Sanderson Farms, said the company was hosting a brief visit with Zhou and his guests because of an important business relationship.
"It's just to get to know the ambassador and let him get to know us," Ellen said.
Sanderson Farms exports nearly six million pounds of chicken feet and wings monthly to China.
Zhou, along with his wife, Shumin Xie, Minister Counselor of Congressional Affairs Ping Zhang, Minister Counselor for Political Affairs Zongze Ruan, and Secretary to Ambassador Zhou Maoming Zhang were offered a glimpse of the best of what Laurel has to offer. They began their afternoon with a tour of the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art.
The evening continued with dinner at the Laurel Country Club. They were also expected to tour one of Sanderson Farm's facilities before a meeting with area leaders.
Lauren Rogers Museum of Art Director George Bassi provided a complete tour of the museum, complete with a brief history of Laurel.
"What can we put in Laurel that will stand the test of time," Bassi said as he explained the history of the museum's establishment.
The ambassador's party were guests of the Laurel Inn Bed and Breakfast.
Innkeepers Mike and Allison Travis said some planning did go into providing exceptional accommodations.
"I am very excited," Allison Travis told the Leader-Call Wednesday, a day before Zhou's arrival. "I'm not nervous, only because I'm going to provide the best of what I have."
"We always try to provide great sleeping arrangements," she said.
Travis also said the Inn offers a different type of accommodations that will be sure to make Zhou, his party, and any other guests comfortable.
"You're not another guests. You're in my home," she said. "We're going to do what we know how to do. Everyone is treated as a personal guest. These people deserve all of the personal attention, as do all the guests."
The Leader-Call will have more details from Zhou's visit to Laurel in Saturday's edition.
