Hyundai to sell hybrid Sonata

Nov 21, 2008 (Montgomery Advertiser - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- HYMTF | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Hyundai has confirmed at this week's Los Angeles International Auto Show that it will sell a hybrid Sonata in the United States within two years, but the car company said it has not decided where to build the vehicle.

All Sonatas sold in the United States are currently assembled at the Hyundai plant in Montgomery, but those vehicles run on traditional gasoline engines. The hybrid will run on a much more complex gasoline-electric power plant.

Hyundai said it is not sure whether the new hybrid will be built in Montgomery, or if it will even be built in the United States.

"We have not decided where it is going to be built," said Miles Johnson, a spokesman for Hyundai Motor America. "It is kind of too early to tell."

Hyundai used the LA show, one that traditionally features environmental advancements, to announce its Hyundai Blue Drive initiative.

The plan is to get Hyundai to a corporate fuel economy of 35 miles per gallon by 2015, which is years ahead of a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration deadline.

Components of the plan include the hybrid vehicle, higher-mileage versions of the Accent and Elantra small cars as well as a number of long-term concepts unveiled at the show.

Johnson said there were two reasons for all the fuel economy announcements -- Los Angeles is the traditional spot for such statements and it is Hyundai's latest initiative.

"It is a good fit for what we are doing," he said.

The hybrid Sonata will pair a standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor. The vehicle also will use lithium polymer battery technology, a more advanced battery pack, according to Hyundai.

Johnson said a number of companies made major announcements at the Los Angeles show. Still, he said there was an undercurrent of worry about the general state of the industry.

"There is no question about some of the things affecting us and the industry at this time," he said.

Despite the tough times, Johnson said Hyundai is committed to its show schedule for 2009.

"We will participate in every show," he said.
