Nov 22, 2008 (High Point Enterprise - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- FDX | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- GUILFORD COUNTY -- FedEx Ground formally announced Friday that the company will build a new Southeast U.S. sort facility in Guilford County, which will lead to the creation hundreds of jobs in the coming years.

FedEx purchased a 125-acre site along Interstate 40 in the Triad Business Park and will construct a 400,000-square-foot facility capable of sorting 45,000 packages per hour at full capacity. The project involves an investment of $100 million, FedEx reports.

A groundbreaking was held Friday at the site along Old Greensboro Road off W. Market Street in western Guilford County.

The FedEx Ground facility will open in 2011 with about 500 full -- and part-time employees, of which about 150 will be new positions, according to the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance. Additionally, the facility will be staffed with about 250 independent contractors at opening, with 150 of them being newly created for the sort operation.

The existing employees and independent contractors will come from the two existing Triad facilities that will be consolidated to the new facility, the alliance reports. Approximately four years after opening, the company projects that about 260 full- and part-time employees, as well as about 200 independent contractors.

The ground facility announcement comes as FedEx Corp. is preparing to open its $300 million mid-Atlantic cargo hub at Piedmont Triad International Airport in the summer of 2009. When both facilities are fully operational, FedEx will directly employ close to 2,000 locally, the alliance reports.

"The economic impact of a new FedEx Ground sort hub is tremendous," said Chuck Cornelio, chairman of the alliance. "FedEx is making another very substantial investment in Guilford County because they see the opportunity our work force and community represents."

The alliance, Samet Corp. and the town of Kernersville worked with FedEx Ground during the last 18 months to recruit the facility.
