Domtar orders delay in work: Stoppage of 10 days is 'market-related'

Nov 22, 2008 (Messenger-Inquirer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- DTC | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Employees of the Domtar Corp. paper mill in Hawesville are facing a temporary work stoppage.

The mill's two paper machines will be down for about 10 days, reopening on or around Dec. 3 or 4, said Michel Rathier, vice president of corporate communications for the Montreal-based company.

Starting this weekend, the mill's pulpline will be down. It will be closed until the beginning of January, Rathier said Friday.

The stoppages are a "market-related downtime," he said. Though some maintenance employees will still be at the mill while the paper machines are down, most of the mill will be closed for about 10 days.

"It's not a permanent closure of the plant," Rathier said. "It is a temporary closure to be able to stabilize our production, our inventory."

Employees are able to use vacation time during the slow down, he said.

"Everything will hopefully be back to normal by the beginning of the month of January," Rathier said.

He would not say how many employees the shutdown affects because it's something the company does not typically comment on, he said.

The Hawesville paper mill was previously owned by Weyerhaeuser Co. In 2006, Weyerhaeuser Co. combined its fine-paper division with Canada's Domtar Inc. to create a $6 billion company named Domtar, the Messenger-Inquirer previously reported.

At that time the company had about 500 employees in Hawesville and about another 60 at a converting plant in Owensboro.

Weyerhaeuser entered Daviess and Hancock counties in 2002 with its $6 billion purchase of Willamette Industries.

The mill has an annual paper production capacity of 634,000 tons and an annual pulp production capacity of 455,000 metric tons, including 47,000 metric tons of mill trade pulp, according to Domtar's Web site.
