The series, which stars Matt Damon, is about a trained assassin is based on books including "The Bourne Identity" by the late Robert Ludlum. A fourth movie, not based on a Ludlum novel, is in the works for release by Universal in 2010.
The deal also gives the studio a first look at developing other Ludlum novels with Ludlum Entertainment. Universal is currently developing a movie project based on "The Sigma Protocol," the last novel written completely by Ludlum, which was published posthumously. Earlier this year, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. acquired the rights to produce Ludlum's "The Matarese Circle." Financial terms were not disclosed. Shares of General Electric rose $1.19 to close at $14.03.
