The Braves All-Star third baseman couldn't resist poking fun at DeVall, the former Niceville pitcher who was selected with the 40th overall pick by Atlanta.
"What's up money bags," Jones asked.
DeVall can answer him now. With spring training still a few months away, the Daily News' reigning big school Player of the Year is back home to unwind, work out and unveil a new business venture.
He's a part owner of Brett's Hitting and Pitching Facility, a training center in Niceville for baseball and softball players of all ages that opened Saturday. It's something DeVall had envisioned doing, and he started seriously thinking about it the summer before his sensational senior season with the Eagles.
"It's always a good investment, but the main thing was to give back a little bit," DeVall said.
As one would imagine, the last year has been one for the time capsule for DeVall. After being one of the driving forces behind Niceville's run to the 5A state semifinals, DeVall heard his name called early on draft day by the Braves and soon headed to Atlanta for a meet and greet with management and players.
He had a 10-minute conversation with Bobby Cox and was surprised that the Braves skipper's personality didn't match his stern, all-business perception. "He was kind of a jokester type of guy, always smiling," DeVall said. "He was an interesting guy."
DeVall's first stop after signing with the Braves was rookie ball in Orlando. While the left-handed hurler pitched well -- he allowed one run and two hits in 10 2/3 innings -- his mound time was cut short after doctors found a bone spur in his tender left elbow.
Two weeks after rookie ball ended, DeVall reported to Atlanta's instructional camp, but his injury relegated him to bullpen sessions and pitching simulated games.
He's been resting his arm since arriving home late last month, and Doctors orders have called for him to take it easy for another month and a half. In the meantime, DeVall will focus on weight training and conditioning.
He wants to be in tip-top shape before reporting to spring training in late February at Disney World in Orlando. And no, he won't be long tossing with the Braves' big leaguers.
"They get the nice field at Disney," he said, "we get the little complex field in the back."
