Judging by the applause Wesley Button received when he got a much-deserved break midway through the fourth quarter, it was clear that Garth had found his man.
Button came off the bench and scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, allowing the Black Bears to pull away for a 65-50 victory.
"I needed somebody to give us a spark," Garth said. "Wesley was that guy."
Button scored on a putback with a little more than a minute remaining in the third quarter to tie the game at 45. After baskets by Verkeneo Mann and Ricky Sears put the Black Bears (4-0) ahead by four at the end of the third quarter, Button scored four straight points to finish off the Tigers (3-2).
"Wesley was the key guy for us tonight," Garth said. "He made a couple of spectacular plays, and he played his heart out."
Austin raced out to a 14-4 lead at the end of the opening quarter, but Hartselle ended the second period with a 13-3 scoring run that pulled the Tigers to within six. Led by the sharp-shooting tandem of Sam Fleischman and Rodney Stansberry, Hartselle fought back to take a 34-33 lead in the third quarter.
Fleischman made four 3-pointers and finished with 21 points, while Stanberry added 17.
"This is a scrappy bunch," Hartselle head coach Johnny Berry said. "To see the fight in them was great.
"You saw the same thing in football this year. Our student body is just a great group of kids with a lot of pride for Hartselle High School, and I think you'll see that as our season goes along."
Austin's Jay Watkins scored 10 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth quarter. Watkins also had 15 rebounds, including five offensive boards. The Black Bears outrebounded Hartselle 34-17 and scored 23 second-chance points.
"In the second half, I told the guys that we had to go to the glass. We had a size advantage, so we had to crash the boards," Garth said. "Our post players -- and guards, too -- did a nice job of that."
Sears added 14 points for Austin, and Mann contributed 10. Button finished with six points.
Austin girls 38, Hartselle 28: Austin went scoreless for seven minutes in the fourth quarter, but the Black Bears held off another struggling offense for the win. Nikkia Jordan hit four free throws in the game's final minute for Austin's only points of the half.
With 21/2 minutes left, Austin held the ball in an effort to run out the remaining time, but three Hartselle fouls sent Jordan to the line.
"We weren't really executing against their defense, so we wanted to get the clock on our side," Austin coach Bruce Hamilton said. "I thought we did a pretty good job of taking care of the ball and hitting our free throws."
Tamya Thompson led Austin (4-0) with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
"Tamya was really active on the boards tonight, and that gave us some scoring opportunities," Hamilton said. "I thought she did an adequate job against Alex Holmes, who I consider one of Hartselle's best players."
Holmes paced Hartselle (1-3) with 12 points.
