The plan to relocate the two weeks of horse racing to surrounding county fairs will be presented today to the Solano County Board of Supervisors. Joe Barkett, in his final days as general manager of the Solano County Fair, will present a report on the future of horse racing at the fair when the board meets at 9 a.m. in the Supervisor chamber, 675 Texas St. in Fairfield.
Horse racing is facing many challenges, leading to the decline in numbers of race horses in the state. With the recent closure of Bay Meadows Race Track in San Mateo, folks in the business have been taking a look at making changes in the summer months.
The traditional two week schedule of racing held in Vallejo, would take place at tracks such as Alameda, Pleasanton and Sonoma County Fairgrounds. The only racing in Solano County would take place during the five days of the fair.
In exchange, Solano County would be guaranteed revenues generated at other racing fairs for five years, with the earnings declining in years six and seven. By the eighth year, Solano would no longer benefit from the summer fair race circuit.
The Solano County Fair Board of Directors has approved this plan. In addition, the Thoroughbred Owners of California, California Thoroughbred Trainers, Magna Entertainment Corporation and the chair of the California Horse Racing Board
are advocating for this change.
