According to the company, Mobifone plans to offer a range of new services to meet the demands of its customers for more advanced communication capabilities in the fast-developing economy.
Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent is to deploy over 1,400 multi-standard base stations in GSM/EDGE technology to improve voice and data services over the Mobifone network and to extend coverage and capacity throughout northern Vietnam.
The services provided by Alcatel-Lucent include project management and installation and deployment, as well as radio network engineering services. The company's multi-standard radio access solution helps operators such as Mobifone evolve toward W-CDMA/HSPA/HSPA+ by software upgrade, using the same radio equipment and is designed to evolve to support IP-based services and LTE (Long Term Evolution), the company said.
The upgrade is expected to enable Mobifone to offer an enriched mobile phone services portfolio that will include content services, air-provisioning and other services by the end of 2009. Some of these offerings will include: mobile entertainment, such as downloadable wallpapers, 'Funring', polyphonic tones, and Java games; mobile messaging, including Short Message Service (SMS), Multi Media Messaging (MMS) and e-mail; address book management; over-the-air provisioning; mobile chat; and mobile info service.
The value of the contract is estimated at USD48m.
