It was also becoming clear that it would soon pay off.
The Red Raiders erased a nine-point deficit with 6:30 remaining and scrapped out a 74-68 win over host Shepherd University in a non-league men's basketball matchup at the Butcher Center.
Following an early 11-9 lead, SU fell into a seven-minute scoring drought and the Rams, still searching for their first win of the young season, played with the lead until the closing minutes, when the Raiders (3-0) ended the game with a 10-2 run.
For Shepherd (0-5), it was all too familiar.
"It's the same thing every game," Rams guard and Chambersburg native Jonathan Motichka said. "We're just too passive at the end. We play aggressive all game but then don't play that way at the end."
"We keep beating ourselves," Shepherd coach Justin Namolik said. "We need to find a way to finish games off. We're still waiting for that light switch to turn on."
Shippensburg faced its biggest deficit of the game at 62-53 with less than seven minutes to play when the Raiders ripped off a 9-0 run to tie the game on Stephon Draper's turnaround jumper with 4:12 remaining.
Draper, who scored nine of his team-high 19 points during the final surge, tied the game again with 2:15 left on a hard drive to the basket and his pull-up jumper on Ship's next possession gave the Raiders their first lead (68-66) in more than 33 minutes.
Shepherd had a chance to tie it when Fred Lymas went to the free throw line in a bonus situation with 46 seconds left, but he missed the front end of the one-and-one. After a free throw by Draper made it 69-66, Tyrone Roach's layup was stuffed by SU's Derrick Graff with 30 seconds left and the Raiders closed it out at the foul line.
"We just kept playing," Shippensburg guard Brian Oleksiak said. "That's the one thing about this team. We always play hard. It's our character."
"It shows a lot of character," Raider coach Dave Springer said. "Our experience is starting to pay off a little bit. We're playing really well together right now."
Roach scored 20 points off the bench -- 18 in the first half -- to lead all scorers. Motichka finished with seven points on 1-for-8 shooting.
Ryan Kraft (18 points) and Graff (17 points, 14 rebounds) complemented Draper in the scoring column for SU. Craig VanScyoc (Shippensburg) scored the first five points of his collegiate career on a layup and a three-pointer from the top of the key in the first half, while Jaren Gembe (Greencastle) was held scoreless on three shots.
