Really. And yes, it was during the same month that the country's economic meltdown reached crisis stage.
The region's unemployment rate was 5.9 percent in October, down from 6.1 percent in September, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services said yesterday.
"At least we're moving in the right direction," said James Newton, chief economic adviser at Commerce National Bank in Columbus. "We're just not moving as energetically in that direction as we would hope."
Despite the seemingly positive news, the forecast is not good.
"I have a feeling that things will continue to deteriorate in November and December and into next year," said Bill LaFayette, vice president for economic analysis at the Columbus Chamber.
He notes that the local unemployment rate isn't seasonally adjusted, so it is artificially increased by short-term jobs. According to his calculations, the rate would have been 6 percent in October, down from 6.1 percent in September, if both had been seasonally adjusted.
Either way, the local rate held pretty steady while the national rate rose from 6.1 percent to 6.5 percent. The state rate also was virtually unchanged, after a summer of big increases, rising from 7.2 percent to 7.3 percent. The national and state figures are seasonally adjusted.
Those comparisons make central Ohio look like an oasis, propped up by the relative stability of major employers such as Ohio State University and the state government.
The region added 5,800 nonagricultural jobs last month.
All of the gains were made in service industries, which added 6,500 jobs. Among goods-producing industries, which include manufacturers, 700 jobs were lost.
Of the eight counties that make up the central Ohio region, only two reported higher jobless rates in October.
Morrow went from 6.9 percent to 7 percent, and Pickaway went from 7 percent to 7.8 percent.
Franklin County's numbers were identical to the region's as a whole, dropping from 6.1 percent to 5.9 percent.
