The award recognizes vehicles for their ability to protect passengers in front, side and rear crashes.
The Santa Fe joined the Veracruz and the Entourage in winning the award. It was the fourth straight award for the Entourage and the second straight for the Santa Fe and Veracruz.
Vehicles are rated based on "injuries" to crash dummies, structural performance and restraint performance. Winners must also have crash prevention features such as electronic stability control.
Chris Susock, director of quality assurance at Montgomery's Hyundai plant, said the award was good news for the plant.
"The Santa Fe's selection as a Top Safety Pick is regarded as one of the highest accolades an automobile brand can receive and this recognition helps to define Hyundai's safety and quality value to the consumer," he said.
"HMMA is very proud of the products we produce and the Santa Fe's recognition by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is one of many that place an exclamation point on the efforts of our team members.
"Vehicle quality and safety is our priority and always will be. Hyundai has put relentless effort toward achieving this mindset so that our customers and all potential customers feel secure and confident in the decision they made in choosing our Hyundai brand."
Michael Deitz, Hyundai Motor America's manager of product development, also praised the award.
"Hyundai remains committed to the implementation of advanced safety technologies, such as electronic active head restraints, introduced on the 2009 Hyundai Genesis," he said in a news release.
"We're pleased that three of our models are Top Safety Picks again this year."
