Pollo Tropical, a Miami-based chain that specializes in Caribbean food, has come to the Greater Hartford region.
Situated in the Charter Oak Marketplace at 475 Flatbush Ave., where Marshalls and Wal-Mart are the major anchors, the fast-food-style restaurant opened less than two weeks ago but is already doing a booming business, thanks to a menu that features its signature citrus-garlic marinated grilled chicken, guava-barbecued ribs, roast pork with onions and side dishes including boiled yucca with mojo sauce, sweet plantains, rice and beans and pollo salsa.
"It has been incredible since we opened," said district manager Steve Schleifer, who is helping to oversee the opening of the Hartford store, one of several planned for Connecticut. "It has been very busy."
The 3,275-sqaure-foot free-standing building is styled in tropical decor and can seat 77 diners. For those who want to get in and go, there is a drive-through window. At huge grills visible from the order counter, a cadre of cooks prepares the chicken, pork and ribs.
Value meals featuring ribs, chicken or roast pork range from $4.19 to $8.99. Items also can be purchased a la carte. Family meals for three to four range from $13.99 to $20.49. Salads and soup, including Caribbean Chicken soup, range from $1.99 to $6.59, while side dishes range from $1.99 to $3.19.
Pollo Tropical also does catering starting at $100 for 15 people and a Caribbean barbecue buffet for 45 priced at $399.
The restaurant is open seven days a week from 10:30 a.m. to midnight. Telephone is 860-218-9492.

Abigail Pettibone, the rumored wanton woman-turned-ghost at a famous Simsbury tavern, is finally getting her due as the landmark eatery has reopened. The former Pettibone's Tavern at Route 185 and 10, named for Col. Jonathan Pettibone, who owned the historic place in the 18th century, has reopened as Abigail's Grill and Wine Bar. Widely known restaurateur Helmar Wolf, who owns the Mill on the River in South Windsor and Cal's Wood-Fired Grill and Bar in West Springfield, has sunk $500,000 into the place, which was closed nearly a year ago after a small fire. Among the improvements are a larger, more modern kitchen, additional dining space and a downstairs bar boasting leather couches and chairs.
"We still have the upstairs bar as well," said Manager Markus Lehofer, formerly of Cavey's in Manchester, about the large lounge area on the second floor of the historic tavern. "And we have a nice wine selection with plans for wine events in the future."
Abigail's is open for lunch Monday through Friday 11:30 to 2 p.m. Dinners are served Monday through Saturday from 4:30 p.m. on. On Sundays, brunch is served from 11 to 2 and dinner is served from 3 to 8 p.m.
A bar menu is available at both the downstairs and upstairs bars from 4 to 11 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Telephone is 860-264-1580.
La Vita Gustosa, 9 Main St., East Haddam, is offering half-price wine specials on Sundays and Tuesdays. Call 860-873-8999 or visit lavitagustosa.com for information.
