Chamber meeting in La Vista to emphasize regional approach

Nov 28, 2008 (Omaha World-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- YHOO | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- The Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting Jan. 21 will emphasize the "greater" portion of its name.

The meeting will be at the La Vista Hotel & Conference Center near Interstate 80 and Harrison Street, one of the first major chamber events to be held outside Omaha's city limits.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will speak at the 11:45 a.m. luncheon, which is expected to draw about 1,500 people.

Tickets are $80.

The chamber has held its annual meeting at the Qwest Center Omaha since that facility opened in 2004. Before that, it was at the Holiday Inn convention center at 72nd and Grover Streets.

Two factors explain the move to Sarpy County's La Vista facility, said chamber spokeswoman Karla Ewert: The Qwest Center's main ballroom was booked that day; and the chamber's membership is spread over four counties.

"We partner with Washington, Douglas, Sarpy and Cass Counties," Ewert said. "We still do a lot of things at the Qwest Center, and will continue to do things at the Qwest Center," such as last week's annual economic outlook luncheon, and at the Holiday Inn.

The chamber also held a recent networking event in Council Bluffs, collaborating with its counterpart there, she said.

"It's all about this regional approach."

The Omaha chamber, which has its headquarters at 1301 Harney St., opened a west Omaha office last year at 13206 Grover St., to be closer to the growing number of members in the western metro area.

About 200 people attended the chamber's annual small-business conference at the La Vista convention center in August, about a month after the facility opened. The chamber also has held other events there, including a press conference to announce plans by Yahoo to open a data center nearby.
