HUNTSVILLE, Nov 28, 2008 (The Decatur Daily - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- AUST | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Austin High can be thankful for buzzer-beating baskets this holiday season.

Jay Watkins' layup with three seconds left helped Austin to a 50-49 win over Ruston (La.) in the opening round of the SportsMed Shootout boys basketball tournament Thursday at the Von Braun Center.

Austin (5-0), playing in its home white uniforms, trailed most of the game and fell behind by nine points, its biggest deficit, early in the third period.

"I told them we need to play with intensity," Black Bears coach Demond Garth said. "Until that point, we were flat."

Trailing 32-23, Watkins started a 22-9 rally with Austin's first points of the third period. The Black Bears came back to tie the Ruston at the end of the quarter on the way to their biggest lead game at 45-41 midway through the fourth period.

The teams traded baskets from there. The Bearcats bounced back and tied the game at 45. Verkeneo Mann, who struggled offensively with four points, gave the Black Bears a 47-45 lead with a 2-point basket with two minutes remaining.

Ruston's Chris Osborne made two free throws to tie the game at 47. Chris Keys made one of two free throws to give Austin a 48-47 lead with 32.5 seconds left.

Devion Spivey answered with two points to put Ruston ahead in the closing seconds as Austin scrambled for the final shot of the game. Then Watkins put back a missed shot for the win.

"We found a way to win," Garth said. "I hope that's the sign of a good team. It was a great team effort."

Ricky Sears scored a game-high 17 points for the Black Bears, who played in their first game since a 65-50 home win against Hartselle five days earlier.

Austin will play Butler in the quarterfinals Friday at 11:30 a.m. A win would set up a meeting with Madison Academy or Bolivar (Tenn.) on Friday at 6 p.m.
