Want to save money this year on your Christmas tree? Here are tips from Catherine Howard, editor of Christmas Trees Magazine:
- Ask for a "corner" or "wall" tree. These are pre-cut trees with an imperfect side you can face toward the wall.
- Shop early for last year's merchandise or shop on the last day they're open to get a discount on decorations.
MAKE IT LAST
Get the most for your money by keeping the tree fresh.
- Until you're ready to decorate, keep it in a cool and sheltered place, out of the sun.
- Make a fresh cut before you put the tree in the stand, to enhance water intake.
- Put hot water in the base to loosen up the sap.
- Don't use preservatives, which can dry the tree out. Plain water is best.
- The tree will take the most water the first day, so check the water level a couple times.

CARTER CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: 656 Horizon South Parkway, Grovetown, one mile off Interstate 20 Grovetown exit. They offer fresh-cut Leyland cypress, Virginia pine, Carolina Sapphire and Murray cypress. Pre-cut Fraser firs from North Carolina will also be available. Prices range from $5 to $10 per foot. Regular opening hours are 3 p.m. Monday-Fridays and 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The fresh-cut tree farm closes at dark each night. Pre-cut trees will be sold on a lighted lot until 8 p.m. Friday to Sunday. They offer hayrides and marshmallow roasts on weekends, and serve hot chocolate and popcorn. GAY'S TREE FARM: 2335 Tobacco Road. They grow Leyland cypress, Carolina Sapphire and Murray cypress, and sell pre-cut Fraser firs from North Carolina. They open today with special hours, 9 a.m. till dark. Regular hours are 2 p.m. to dark Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to dark Saturday and 1 p.m. to dark Sunday. The farm offers hayrides, hot chocolate and popcorn. Call (706) 798-3731.
JAKE'S CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: U.S. Highway 25 South, Waynesboro. They offer choose-and-cut Virginia pines, Red cedar, Leyland cypress, Blue Ice and Carolina Sapphire, from 5 to 9 feet tall. Prices are $20 to $32. Hours are 9 a.m. to dark today, with regular hours of 3 p.m. to dark Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to dark Saturday and 1 p.m. to dark Sunday. Call (706) 437-8454.
CLARKS HILL CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: 39 Bennie Dorn Road, Clarks Hill. They offer seven varieties of choose-and-cut: Leyland cypress, Carolina Sapphire, Clemson greenspire, Virginia pine; white, red and Deodor cedar. They have trees up to 25 feet. Hours today are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Regular hours are 2-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 1-5:30 p.m. Sundays. Prices start at $25 and go up to $150 for 25-foot-tall trees. SWEET WATER TREE FARM: 931 State Park Road, Windsor; east of Aiken, between U.S. Highway 78 and South Carolina Highway 302. They grow Virginia pine, Carolina Sapphire, White pine and Leyland cypress; pre-cut trees from Michigan include Fraser fir, Scotch pine and Douglas fir. They open today at 9 a.m. Regular hours are 1 p.m. to dark Sunday-Friday, and 9 a.m. to dark Saturday. Prices start at $25. They offer hayrides on the weekends, a playhouse and miniature golf for children. Call (803) 617-9374.
TOM SAWYER'S CHRISTMAS TREE FARM: 402 Uncle Duck Road, Monetta. Choose-and-cut trees include Virginia pine, White pine, Leyland cypress, Carolina Sapphire, and Red cedar; they also offer pre-cut Fraser fir. Regular hours are 1 p.m. to dark Sunday-Friday, 10 a.m. to dark Saturday or by appointment. Prices start at $15 for small trees and go up to $75. TURKEY CREEK CHRISTMAS TREE FARM : 211 Wade Morgan Road, McCormick. Choose-and-cut trees include Virginia pine, white pine, Red cedar, Leyland cypress and Carolina Sapphire. They're open 10 a.m. to dark Fridays and Saturdays and 1 p.m. to dark Sundays. Trees start at $20.
