Two buildings that were destroyed in the fire were rebuilt, and two others that had been gutted due to water damage were restored. The outdoor amphitheater also burned and had to be rebuilt, and the swimming pool was completely refurbished, as well.
The camp, which is used year round, has 180 beds in 10 multi-room cabins. Hundreds of High Desert youth and thousands of youth from other parts of the Inland Empire attend the numerous youth conferences and girls' camps that are held each year at Camp Hinckley.
The newly rebuilt twostory Conference Center was rededicated Nov. 15 by church dignitaries. It sleeps 29 downstairs, while the upstairs conference room seats about 140. Numerous other improvements and upgrades were also made at the camp.
"Every thing is much b e t t e r n ow," s a i d Ca rl Mortensen, who is host and caretaker of the camp with his wife, Diane. "It's a real improvement. We went from a Motel 6 to a Marriott."
But while praising the many improvements of the rebuilt camp, Mortensen mourned the loss of hundreds of trees.
"About 200 trees have been removed from the camp," he said. "And approximately another 200 will be removed this spring." But he was grateful that Camp Hinckley is up and running once again and able to serve the needs of the local youth.
