EL PASO, Nov 30, 2008 (El Paso Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- FD | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- What's an old-school painter like Rodolfo Razo showing in a hip space like the HusH Gallery?

"He's so underappreciated," said the gallery's Jaime O. Perez.

Razo, a retired commercial artist, has created a new body of works in oils, acrylics and watercolors called the "Rodolfo Razo's HusH Collection." The exhibit will open with a reception at 6 p.m. Saturday at the space in Downtown El Paso.

The show encompasses 27 pieces on large and small canvasses, which include portraits to cityscapes. Prices range from $250 to $1,200.

Many of them are celebrity portraits, including takes on Brad Pitt, Dakota Fanning and Jake Gyllenhall, done in a style rooted in the impressionistic style of jazz-inspired '50s and early '60s art.

Razo calls his portrait of Billie Holiday "not one of my best," but refers to the rest of the collection as "splashy and spontaneous."

He is an El Paso-born artist who studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Arts Students League of Visual Arts in New York, where he worked for 30 years as a commercial artist, doing everything from window displays to images for major retailers such as Macy's.

While a lot of his contemporaries trace their subjects from projections, Razo works freehand.

"One of my friends looked at one of my paintings and said, 'Is that a photo?' " he recalled with achuckle.

Perez said the work in the "HusH Collection" reflected the freedom Razo has enjoyed since retiring and moving back to El Paso six years

ago. "He's having fun. He's reliving his life," Perez said.
