Beaver County Times, Pa., Scott Tady column: Mars lands in Monaca

Nov 30, 2008 (Beaver County Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- FD | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- Mars Drum Shop, a longtime Ambridge fixture, has moved to Monaca.

I strolled in the new store last Tuesday and found Mars Scarazzo, himself, seated behind the counter, hammering out a flashy drum solo like he did in his days with the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra.

Scarazzo said he's sold his inventory to two new owners from Center, who will manage the store, but he's not retiring.

"I don't have time for that -- I'm 78 years old," said Scarazzo, who earned a platinum record with the Ray Anthony Band, and whose pupils have included Hopewell High graduate George Perilli, who played drums for Reba McEntire, Donna Summer and Michael McDonald.

An inductee of the Beaver Valley Musicians Hall of Fame, Scarazzo will continue giving drum lessons at the new Monaca location, which also will offer guitar instruction from Lew Showrank.

"I would like to eventually invite a lot of Beaver County's guitarists to come in to do a workshop for the students so they can share their expertise with the next generation of musicians," Showrank said.

HER STAR IS SHINING

For a 15-year-old girl, Vanessa Campagna displayed excellent concentration last weekend.

Not once did I catch her eyeing up the Dooney & Bourke or Fossil purses dangling a few feet from her grasp as she performed inside the jam-packed, downtown Macy's as part of Pittsburgh's Light-Up Night. With poise and personality, Campagna delivered a 30-minute solo set, before moving outside to Grant Street to sing some more.

I don't want to worry B.E. Taylor, but the 5-foot-2 Chippewa Township girl seems to be stealing some of his seasonal spotlight.

Campagna also was scheduled to perform in yesterday's Macy's Celebrate the Season Parade in Pittsburgh, while on Dec. 6 she will present a Christmas concert in Washington, Pa.

On Dec. 7, Campagna gives a holiday performance inside the Beaver Valley Mall, and on Dec. 17 she will open the Doo-Wop Christmas show for the Platters at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center in Midland.

'ZACK & MIRI' MAKES MONEY

Winding down its theatrical run today, Kevin Smith's "Zack & Miri Make a Porno" has grossed more than $22 million.

That puts it at No. 16 on the list of made-in-Pittsburgh movies, tucked between Whoopi Goldberg and Drew Barrymore's "Boys on the Side" ($23 million) and Jean-Claude Van Damme's "Sudden Death" ($20 million). Smith's other Pittsburgh-made movie, 1999's "Dogma," made $30 million.

The top-three movies shot prominently in Pittsburgh are "Silence of the Lambs" ($130 million), "Inspector Gadget" ($97 million) and "Flashdance" ($95 million).

TIDBITS

The Sun Kings will warm the crowd Wednesday for Boston-New York reggae band John Brown's Body at Mr. Small's Theatre in Millvale.

The Beaver County-based Sun Kings are selling tickets via their Web site, www.thesunkingsmusic.com. The cost is $15.

B.E. Taylor's annual Beaver County holiday show takes place this Saturday at the Beaver Falls Middle School. Tickets cost $28 and are available by calling (724) 891-0265.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

The Hard Rock Cafe at Station Square hopes to break from its chain mentality by offering a new regional menu.

The restaurant now offers four Pittsburgh favorites: Pierogis, Kielbassa Sandwiches, Pittsburgh Pastrami Sandwiches (topped with slaw and seasoned fries) and Pittsburgh Strip Steak symbolically seared on a slab of hot metal.

They should have gone a step further and named some menu items after Pittsburgh musical stars. How about an Aguilera Salad with Anti-Flag Fries and a mug of Rusted Root Beer?

l Not to boast, but a roast beef sandwich was named for me in the New York Post.

Tady's Stratocaster Beef Blaster is the creation of Baden resident Justin Miller, 18, who introduced the sandwich in his Nov. 17 youth food column that runs in the Post.

Twice proclaimed "The World's Youngest Chef" by the Guinness Book of World Records, Miller is shopping around his second cookbook, "Cooking for Dormies: Recipes for College Students, Newlyweds and People Just Beginning to Learn How to Cook."

We'll have to wait for his third book to include the Tady's Stratocaster Beef Blaster, which features crumbled bleu cheese, mozzarella, mayo, roast beef, walnuts, bacon and basil.

Must admit, I was surprised to hear my name associated with roast beef.

Some folks might argue I'm more of a ham.

Or a turkey.
