Hospice of the Rapidan, which provides end-of-life care to terminally ill patients and their families in Culpeper and the surrounding counties, illuminates its 17th annual Tree of Lights in a ceremony Dec. 5. Members of the community can sponsor a light on the tree in StellarOne Bank on Main Street to honor or remember a loved one.
"All of this is done to support the work that we're doing in the community," said Kathy Clements, Hospice of the Rapidan's executive director. "That's what this is about; raising that much-needed money."
Hospice of the Rapidan is a licensed, nonprofit organization that offers services for patients without any insurance, as well as bereavement services for the community. Clements said there is a gap in what insurance covers for many people requiring hospice care.
The organization works in partnership with area banks for the annual ceremony, which provide the trees, the lights, the space and volunteers. The tree at StellarOne is one of three Trees of Light; the others are at Rappahannock National Bank in Washington and The Fauquier Bank in Warrenton.
The Culpeper ceremony is Dec. 5, but anyone can sponsor lights up through Christmas. The event is free and open to the community. Hospice of the Rapidan's volunteers will provide appetizers and volunteer Melanie Chambers will lead the ceremony.
Specialist Mitchell Fors II, U.S. Army National Guard, of Culpeper, will light the Tree of Lights and the Woodberry Forest School Chamber Ensemble will perform holiday selections.
After someone sponsors a light, Hospice of the Rapidan sends a notification to the recipient inviting him or her to the ceremony. If the light is in someone's memory, Hospice will notify friends or family. The names of honorees will be listed in the evening's program.
In addition to the lights, there will be glass crystal ornaments for sale for $30. The ornaments depict Hospice's 25-year-old logo -- a pair of dolphins.
"Generally you see (dolphins) together," Clements said. "If someone is in distress, they take care of them. That's what hospice is about -- taking care of people."
