With sales of consumer electronics sluggish amid a spending slump, Yamada Denki intends to prompt customers to come back to its stores more often by selling food, demand for which is usually solid even in tough times.
Yamada Denki already sells baked goods and beverages at some stores, with plans in place to install refrigerated display cases for boxed meals, rice balls, sandwiches, hams and yogurt.
Yamada Denki stores in Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture, and Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, started selling 10-packs of eggs for 208 yen each and 1-liter milk containers for 178 yen. A store to open in the suburbs of Yokohama on Dec. 5 will also handle these chilled foods.
