Then there was the music. Mel Melton & The Wicked Mojos warmed up the crowd. Then B.B King's band -- two saxophones, two trumpets, a guitarist, keyboard, bass and drums -- warmed the crowd with a rocking blues.
Then, at last, the master of the blues guitar -- who has influenced the likes of Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix and countless others -- took his seat center stage, to a standing ovation.
"I was told I was the first blues guy you brought in here, so I hope we have set a pace," King said.
Stories have always been important in King's concerts, and this time was no exception. King also peppered his stories with frequent self-deprecating references to his age, 83. He need not have made the effort, because his numerous solos of the night proved once again that while King has influenced many guitarists, none quite phrases lines the way he does.
On "Every Day I Have the Blues," King played the kind of spare, at times hard-hitting, but always sweet solos that are the trademark of his sound. On the classic tune "Key to the Highway," King positively milked the notes on this slow blues.
King's band is made up of fine soloists, and the ensemble has a strong sense of dynamics, and played softly to accent King's solos, at other times using crescendo to create drama.
King is always personable, and with age his stage persona only becomes more so, improving his frequent banter with the crowd.
On a cool, wet, foggy November night, Durham got a warm dose of the blues from B.B. King -- a great antidote to dreary weather, and a great way to open the Durham Performing Arts Center.
