The incident began around 9:20 p.m. when deputies noticed the Taurus around Melaleuca Lane and Congress Avenue. A computer check of the license plate showed the car had been stolen out of West Palm Beach, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.
Deputies followed the Taurus south on Congress to Lantana Road, then east to Interstate 95, south on the interstate to Boynton Beach Boulevard, then east on Northeast Sixth Avenue and on to the 500 block of Federal Highway where the car became disabled, Barbera said.
The driver refused repeated demands to get out of the Taurus. Deputies approached the vehicle and shots were fired, she said.
The deputy was not hurt, the Sheriff's Office said.
Investigators were on the scene past midnight and expected to be there for hours. "We are still in the very beginning stages," Barbera said.
