Dec 02, 2008 (Leader-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NYT | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- John Perkins, best-selling author of "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man," will discuss his plan for a sustainable and stable world during a lecture Monday at UW-Eau Claire.

The Forum will present his address, "Geopolitics, the Future and You: A Call to Action," at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena.

Perkins has lived four lives: as an "economic hit man"; as the CEO of an alternative energy company; as an expert on shamanism and indigenous cultures; and as a writer who, through his 2004 book about his experience as an economic hit man, revealed the corruption turning the American republic into a widely despised global empire.

"Confessions of an Economic Hit Man," Perkins' expose of international corruption, spent more than a year on The New York Times best-seller list and has been published in more than 30 languages.

As an economic hit man, Perkins worked to persuade Third World countries to accept large loans. Once these countries were crippled with these debts, the U.S. government and international aid agencies allied with it were able to control the countries. Perkins wrote the book after the events of Sept. 11, 2001, which moved him to reveal his life of secrecy.

Historian Howard Zinn called Perkins' work "a sweeping, bold assault on the tyranny of corporate globalization, full of drama and adventure, with devastating stories of greed run wild."

In his latest best-seller, "The Secret History of the American Empire" (2007), Perkins explores hot spots around the world and, through interviews with other economic hit men, reporters, activists and politicians, examines the current geopolitical crisis.

Perkins will discuss the epiphany that initiated his personal change and the reasons he is optimistic we can create societies our children will be proud to inherit.
