It's all part of Atlantic Southeast Airlines' Adopt-A-School program, says Corporate Communications Specialist Kristen Loughman.
"ASA is operating Santa's Special Sleigh for the students at Hendrix Drive Elementary. ASA is a partner with Hendrix Drive Elementary School through Clayton County's program," she said. "It was started as a way to inspire these children to achieve excellence in their Accelerated Reader program."
The computerized reading program tests the student's reading comprehension skills. Each year more than 200 students compete for a coveted seat on "Santa's Special Sleigh" where they will fly to the "North Pole." This year 30 students were chosen to take the trip Wednesday.
"The plane is a 50-seat CRJ200. It will depart from ASA's Technical Center in Atlanta at 9 a.m. and will arrive at the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport at 10:10 a.m.," Loughman said.
"The students depart the airport and arrive at the Sea Turtle Center at 10:45 a.m. to tour the facility and enjoy the center's programs. After the center tour is complete, students will travel to the Jekyll Island Convention Center to enjoy lunch, games and a visit from Santa before departing for home."
ASA airport managers submit proposals annually to have their city host the "North Pole." Loughman says that Jekyll Island and the Sea Turtle Center best fit the program's criteria.
"The location is chosen based on the proximity to Atlanta and the educational value of the location. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center was chosen as the 'North Pole' because of its dynamic and educational programs, which fit the educational trip guidelines for the State of Georgia public school system," she said.
"The students love this trip. Santa's Special Sleigh is the first flight for many of these students. It is a great reward for their reading efforts and it gives them an adventure that they will remember throughout their lifetime."
Beth Burnsed, event marketing coordinator for the Jekyll Island Authority, says that she's certain the trip will be one to remember.
"We feel that the Georgia Sea Turtle Center is the perfect place for the "North Pole" because the Georgia Sea Turtle Center staff has an exceptional ability to bring smiles to kids' faces," she said. "We are very honored to be chosen by American Southeast Airlines as the destination for their Santa's Sleigh program."
